Last year saw classic country furniture and pendant lighting become some of the biggest interior trends, but as technology continues to advance and people’s taste changes what can we expect to be big in 2017?
Here, home interior specialists Baytree Interiors talk us through some of the emerging trends that are set to be big this year.
Colour choices
The Pantone colour of the year for 2017 is Greenery, a vibrant shade of green that provides a pop of colour and brings the outside in. Greenery may be a little too vibrant to paint an entire room in, but using it to create a feature wall or to add colour to the room with soft furnishings can create a fresh and bold look.
Dulux, on the other hand have chosen Denim Drift as their colour of the year. This calming shade of blue is perfect for any room, creating a great basis for experimentation and giving the illusion of more space.

Other colour trends that are set to be big this year include tropical prints, geometric patterns and added texture for wallpaper and soft furnishings, while marble and brass will be the must have combination for bathrooms and kitchens.
Furniture
Unobtrusive furniture is the name of the game in 2017 with simple lines and fabric; this allows a few key design elements to stand out and create focal points in the room without the whole design becoming cluttered and disjointed.
Multi-functional furniture that can adapt to different areas is also a good choice. Our interiors are now expected to perform multiple functions such as entertaining or relaxing and pieces like extendable tables and stackable chairs are great for creating a multi-functional space.
Upholstered headboards are coming back into fashion and can add that wow factor to a bedroom while adding colour and texture to the room at the same time.
Over the last few years we have seen technology being integrated into interior design and this trend will continue this year. We have already seen that TV manufacturers are making design statements with their products and our furniture will evolve too, as designs become more sympathetic to our project goals.
Lighting
Chandeliers are still as popular as ever for creating a statement in a room and this year will be no different. Modern chandelier designs tend to steer away from the classic candlestick look, instead encompassing geometric shapes and mixing metals such as brass, copper and nickel.
Geometry for lighting as a whole has seen a big resurgence over the past few years, especially cage light fixtures which now come in a wide range of shapes and sizes.
Smart lightbulbs are relatively new to the market, but as prices fall they will be integrated into mainstream interior design. Smart LED lights can be controlled with a Smartphone, meaning that they can be scheduled to switch on and off at specific times or controlled without using the light switch; some LED lights can even change colours to create a more ambient feel to a room at different times of day.

Technology
With many of our daily lives incorporating some form of technology and the ongoing innovation within the sector, our homes are about to get even more connected. Soon to hit the mass market are Blue-tooth enabled appliances that can tailor every aspect of our lives, these include smart devices that can brew your coffee to your specific taste or cook your toast to just the right colour by using a Smartphone app.

Virtual personal assistants such as Google Home, Amazon Echo and Lenovo’s Smart Assistant are fast becoming the must have home gadget of the year and allow users to schedule their days, check on traffic and weather conditions and play their favourite music through voice recognition.
