Sailing Championship HQ by ARUP and AZPA

ARUP-SPAIN-01 Architects and creatives at ARUP were in charge of the Sailing Championship HQ project in Santander (Spain), working carefully on the task for the past seven years. ARUP has been carrying out a comprehensive regeneration strategy for a 60 ha location that will become the Port of Santander’s new sea property. Total of 95 countries, 900 ships, and more than 1,200 participants will use the space for the World Sailing Championship, in a ten day international competition which will determine the shortlisted for competing in the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio.

AZPA was in charge of the architectural design and while ARUP provided structural, mechanical, electrical, public health and fire engineering design.

ARUP has also carried out full SMEP and fire engineering services for the Elite Sailing Training Centre. The roof is being used as a public space, from which Regattas can be viewed during the world championship event, with a pedestrian access ramp from ground level.

ARUP office in Madrid put together a team of over 25 professionals, including architects, engineers, lawyers, economists, real estate specialists, landscapers and sociologists. Through coordinating both public and private initiatives, this waterfront regeneration has created a unique model capable of meeting the requirements of different users, combining the port’s activities with the leisure aspects of the Santander bay.
