UNS and Poltrona Frau reimagine the art of gathering with Dune Diwan, a modular seating system that bridges cultures, traditions, and contemporary lifestyles. Drawing direct inspiration from the Middle Eastern Majlis, a space rooted in hospitality and meaningful conversation, Dune Diwan transforms the act of sitting together into an intentional, shared experience.

Dune Diwan’s design language is a harmonious blend of East and West. The system features low, wide cushions referencing nomadic traditions, seamlessly combined with structured, Western-style seating. This hybrid approach offers users the flexibility to create informal lounge areas or more classic arrangements, adapting intuitively to both indoor and outdoor settings.

The Majlis, or “living room,” is a cultural institution that fosters community and exchange. Dune Diwan honours this heritage, translating the closeness and hospitality of the Majlis into a minimalist, contemporary form. “Dune Diwan honours the heritage of the Majlis but reinterprets it through a contemporary, minimalist lens. Designed for those who navigate between East and West, it bridges ancient traditions with modern trends,” says Ben van Berkel, Founder and Senior Architect at UNS.
Breaking away from conventional sofa typologies, Dune Diwan introduces asymmetrical forms and dynamic compositions. The modular elements, ranging from corner pieces and low tables to armrests and supports, can be arranged into central islands, intimate corners, or classic linear setups. This versatility allows the system to evolve with the needs of its users, whether for lively social gatherings, quiet reflection, or collaborative work.

The design palette reflects the collection’s roots, with powdery blues and earthy sandy tones evoking a sense of calm and understated elegance. The eight upholstered modules are available in Pelle Frau® leather or fabric, with removable covers for added practicality. Poltrona Frau’s signature craftsmanship is evident in the customisable combinations of leather and fabric, ensuring each configuration is both refined and functional.
Thoughtful accessories, such as a central table, tray, incense burner, and vase crafted from oak, leather, and stainless steel, complement the seating system, enhancing both utility and aesthetic appeal. A coordinating rug, inspired by Middle Eastern motifs, ties each arrangement together, reinforcing the collection’s sense of place.
Looking forward, Dune Diwan extends its philosophy outdoors with an alfresco version, inviting new interpretations of open-air living. This evolution underscores the collection’s commitment to adaptability, connection, and timeless design.
