IKEA introduces a new 12-piece collection of tableware and home objects designed with Swedish designer Gustaf Westman. The collection forms part of IKEA’s annual winter range, VINTERFINT, and reflects a playful interpretation of seasonal tradition. Plates, cups, candleholders, and lighting anchor the collection, which carries a message that celebration can take place any day, not only during marked holidays.

Collaboration with Gustaf Westman

This marks Gustaf Westman’s first collaboration with another company, a partnership that pairs IKEA’s global reach with Westman’s recognizable design language. Together they present a modern and inclusive view of seasonal gatherings. Maria O’Brian, IKEA Range Identity Leader, explains that Westman’s expressive approach to form and color complements IKEA’s own identity while adding an experimental edge. “Teaming up with Gustaf Westman felt like a natural match to help us reimagine the holidays with a twist,” she says.

Westman himself reflects on the project as a chance to reinterpret tradition. “For me, this was an opportunity to take traditional holiday decor aesthetics and turn it on its head, instead, introducing a sense of playfulness and boldness,” he notes.

The collection carries Westman’s signature sculptural curves and confident color choices. While classic holiday shades of red and green establish tradition, bubble gum pink and baby blue inject playfulness into the palette.

A Closer Look at the Collection

Porcelain dining plates introduce contrasts in form, with square outlines framing soft, round wells. Available in pink and dark green, they can stand alone or combine as a mosaic-like table arrangement.

The range also honours Swedish traditions. As IKEA’s iconic meatball turns 40, a dedicated plate presents the dish in a row, underscoring its cultural significance. “This plate is my interpretation of that tradition,” says Westman. “It’s a simple, fun idea designed to honour the meatball, but it works perfectly for so many other things, too.”

A porcelain cup and saucer set, created for mulled wine, features an oversized saucer that accommodates biscuits. Westman recalls his grandmother’s holiday baking as inspiration, offering a nod to the Swedish ritual of fika.

Light as a Central Theme

Lighting objects hold a significant place within the collection. Candlesticks and porcelain candleholders echo the square-and-round language of the plates. A rechargeable lantern introduces a new form, expanding from a layered body into an orbital shape when twisted. A contemporary interpretation of the traditional candelabra lamp, often placed in Swedish windows, rounds out the lighting designs.

The Playful Vase

The final piece in the collection, a vase, incorporates humor into design. Formed from a spiraled metal frame shaped like an hourglass spring, it holds a removable glass vessel. The spiral doubles as both structure and decoration, supporting drooping flowers in unexpected ways. Westman describes the vase as an object with life and a touch of humor, created from two parts that appear independent but depend on each other.
