Ponto C Cultura e Criatividade enters Penafiel with a clear urban intention. The project introduces a new connection to the southern part of the city and redefines how the area relates to its historic center. For years, the site carried the idea of a city divided. This intervention shifts that perception by creating a continuous path and a new point of access. What once functioned as the rear now addresses Praça de S. Martinho as a composed front, giving the building a civic presence tied to movement and visibility.

CULTURAL

Galeria Gabinete approaches the site through both scale and restraint. The building anticipates its volumetric impact and responds by embedding itself into the terrain. Differences in topography guide the design, allowing the structure to sit low within planted greenery and magnolias. The previous construction remains visible, forming a base for new material layers and uses. The exterior introduces sprayed cork cladding, applied in a saturated green tone that will evolve over time. Light and viewing angle alter its appearance, giving the façade a shifting quality that reads differently across the day.

The program distributes across four levels with a precise separation of functions. Level -2 operates as a technical platform for loading and unloading, ensuring that service circulation stays independent from visitor movement. A dedicated freight system connects all floors, maintaining efficiency without disrupting public areas. Levels -1 and 0 host the main visitor experience. The entrance at level 0 leads directly into the foyer, where ticketing, circulation, and access to the auditorium and Casa da Caturra align in a clear sequence. Support spaces such as dressing rooms and security remain integrated yet discreet.

Level -1 expands the experience beyond performance. Exhibition spaces, a café, and the first tier of the auditorium open toward the exterior. From here, visitors move directly into the garden, the outdoor auditorium, and the pathway leading toward the Cavalum. This connection between interior and landscape reinforces the building’s role as a cultural connector rather than an isolated object. The upper level functions entirely as a technical zone, providing direct access to the stage catwalk and supporting production requirements.

Material contrast defines the interior atmosphere. The entrance sequence reads as open and transitional, while the auditorium introduces a more concentrated environment. Deep red tones shape the space, creating a focused setting that prepares the audience for performance. This shift from the green exterior to a warm interior palette establishes a clear spatial identity without relying on excess detail.

Ponto C positions itself as infrastructure for cultural activity while addressing long-standing urban fragmentation. Its design prioritizes movement, access, and continuity, linking previously disconnected areas through architecture that responds directly to context. The project establishes a new reference point in Penafiel, where circulation, program, and landscape align to support both daily use and larger cultural events.
