In the exclusive realm of private schools, where luxuries often rival those found in upscale resorts, Friends Seminary stands out by introducing a rare Skyspace created by renowned light artist James Turrell. While other private schools in New York City boast cutting-edge facilities, Friends Seminary sets itself apart by adding a museum-quality Turrell Skyspace on its sixth floor. This transformative meeting space, named Leading,” offers both students and the public a distinctive encounter, with its ceiling opening to the ever-shifting sky, illuminated in dynamic colors.

Turrell’s Skyspaces provide viewers with a distinctive engagement with the sky within meticulously crafted chambers. Illuminated with gentle lighting, observers witness the sky’s evolving tones, particularly mesmerizing during twilight. Surrounded by seating, the space frames the sky, while LED lights manipulate perceptions of color. Grounded in the science of human light perception, each viewer’s encounter becomes an integral part of the artwork itself. “Leading” will be open to the public on March 1 and March 8, with free admission on a first-come, first-served basis. Following these initial dates, visits will be possible on the last Friday of each month until the school year concludes. Reservations for March visits open on Sunday, February 25, at 9 a.m., with additional dates to be announced later.

Weekly meditation sessions led by the school’s academic center director offer students a serene opportunity to interact with the installation. Initially met with varied reactions from students, the significance of housing such an artwork on campus gradually becomes apparent, reflecting a dedication to creativity and artistic expression. The decision to commission Turrell for Friends Seminary originated from Robert Lauder, the school’s head, who saw its potential to set the institution apart in New York City’s competitive private education landscape. Aligned with Quaker values, the Skyspace embodies the school’s mission, providing a tangible representation of its commitment to creativity and inclusivity.

Beyond serving as an artistic piece, the Skyspace becomes an educational asset for students of all ages. Art teacher Andrea Aimi leads students on excursions to the Skyspace, encouraging them to explore color perception and engage with the artwork firsthand. Likewise, upper school graphic design classes draw inspiration from the Skyspace, investigating the impact of color combinations on perception. The journey of bringing the Skyspace to Friends Seminary reflects a collaborative endeavor involving the school administration, donors, and Turrell himself. From initial discussions to fundraising initiatives and architectural realization, the project results in a space that enhances the educational journey and introduces new perspectives for students and visitors. As the Skyspace welcomes the public, it serves as a testament to creative vision and a celebration of the power of collaboration in education.
