Located in Georgeville, a rural enclave in Quebec’s Magog region, Rural Hamlet by MUUK Architecture reinterprets traditional farm architecture through a contemporary lens. The 4,000-square-foot residence is composed of three primary volumes connected by curved passageways, forming a composition that feels both timeless and site-specific. The home integrates seamlessly into the sloping terrain, evoking the natural order of a historic farmstead while embracing the rhythm of modern living.
RESIDENTIAL
From the road, the residence reads as a small cluster of agricultural buildings. Gray steel roofs and natural cedar façades anchor the structure within the surrounding fields and rolling hills, their muted tones shifting with the weather. Each volume follows the topography, with the curving connectors enclosing a protected courtyard, a spatial heart that defines the project.

This inner courtyard extends the living environment outdoors, hosting a pool with integrated hot tub, multi-level terraces, and three distinct areas for swimming, dining, and gathering around a fire pit. The fluid connection between these zones allows a continuous experience of the landscape, where the boundary between architecture and nature dissolves. A lower-level garage, connected by a curved walkway, completes the ensemble and reinforces the idea of a contemporary hamlet.
Inside, massive timber beams, red cedar ceilings, and stone walls create a warm, tactile atmosphere. The central fireplace becomes the anchor of the main living space, while the kitchen combines craftsmanship and intimacy with its built-in banquette and wall tapestry. A curved stone staircase leads to guest rooms on the lower level and to a bar area that opens directly onto the pool through retractable windows, transforming it into an open-air pavilion during summer months.

Rural Hamlet is an exploration of how traditional forms can evolve without losing their emotional connection to place. MUUK Architecture’s design balances restraint and generosity, merging vernacular simplicity with contemporary precision. The result is a home that feels as though it has always belonged to its landscape, rooted, enduring, and quietly elegant.
