Advancing Sustainable Design Through Innovative Cork Systems

Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has partnered with Gencork to unveil Thalia, an innovative cork wall panel system that combines the natural properties of cork with advanced computational design. This collaboration marks Gencork’s 10th anniversary and introduces Thalia at Maison & Objet (M&O) Paris in January 2025.

A Legacy of Design Meets Sustainable Craft

Thalia originated from ZHA’s bespoke cork wall designs for its global headquarters in London. Spanning four storeys, these feature walls reflect key milestones in ZHA’s architectural history while incorporating functional benefits. Gencork collaborated with ZHA to manufacture and install these walls, which offer acoustic absorption, thermal comfort, and anti-vibration properties.

The material’s rich texture, created from expanded black cork, improves the workspace with a tactile warmth. Beyond aesthetics, the design showcases the sustainable versatility of cork, a material known for its low environmental impact and natural durability.

The Evolution of Thalia

The Thalia relief pattern stems from ZHA’s exploration of generative design. Using computational algorithms, the team refined multiple prototypes to develop a sculptural, three-dimensional form tailored for interiors. Variables such as curve symmetry, smoothness, gradation, and density were adjusted to align with Gencork’s craftsmanship, ensuring the design remains practical while retaining its distinctiveness.

Each curve was optimized to maximize fluidity and depth, creating a striking visual and tactile experience. The result is a system that transforms interior walls into dynamic surfaces that emphasize the natural qualities of cork.

A Sustainable Design Process

Gencork sources its expanded cork locally, employing sustainable practices throughout production. Biomass is used to generate the steam needed to create expanded black cork, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint. This eco-friendly approach reflects both companies’ commitment to integrating sustainability into advanced architectural solutions.

Cork’s natural benefits, including thermal insulation and sound absorption, make it a standout material for interiors. Combined with ZHA’s design innovations, Thalia demonstrates how sustainable materials can meet the demands of cutting-edge design.

After its debut at Maison & Objet, Thalia will become part of Gencork’s product range, making Zaha Hadid Architects’ innovative research accessible to a wider audience. This collaboration not only celebrates Gencork’s milestone anniversary but also reinforces the potential of sustainable materials in reshaping architectural and interior design.
