Issey Miyake has opened its new flagship store at 45 Madison Avenue in New York City, bringing the Japanese fashion house into one of Manhattan’s most recognizable architectural settings. The store sits on the ground floor of the New York Life Building, designed by Cass Gilbert, at the corner of Madison Avenue and 26th Street. Overlooking Madison Square Park, the new flagship covers 13,000 square feet across two levels and places Issey Miyake’s design language inside a space shaped by New York history, advanced engineering, and material precision.

New York-based architecture firm Solid Objectives Idenburg Liu designed the store, creating a retail environment that connects the building’s Beaux-Arts structure with new custom aluminum and stainless-steel surfaces. The architects exposed selected historic elements of the original interior, allowing the store to retain a direct connection to the New York Life Building.

The two-level interior centers on a transparent staircase made from large-format structural glass. The staircase gives the store its main architectural gesture, drawing the eye through the space while connecting the ground floor with the second level. Its construction required advanced engineering and precise fabrication, turning a functional element into one of the defining features of the flagship. Large windows run along three sides of the store, bringing natural light into the interior and linking the space to Madison Square Park and the surrounding city.

Material reuse also plays an important role in the design. Glass wall panels from Issey Miyake’s recently closed Tribeca flagship now serve as tables for accessories and folded items. This decision gives material from the former location a new purpose within the Madison Avenue store and creates a physical link between two chapters of the brand’s New York presence. A titanium panel also appears inside the space, marking the friendship between Frank Gehry and Issey Miyake.

At the rear of the store, Issey Miyake has introduced MADO, a dedicated gallery space for rotating exhibitions, brand collaborations, and special projects. The name means “window” in Japanese, and the space serves as the first gallery inside an Issey Miyake store outside Japan. MADO gives the Madison Avenue flagship a cultural role beyond retail, creating a setting for projects connected to the brand’s ideas, design practice, and broader creative network.

The brand introduces its latest New York chapter with a store that brings fashion, architecture, exhibitions, and exclusive design into one address.
