The University of Alberta has opened University Commons, a 405,000-square-foot adaptive reuse project designed by Zeidler Architecture. The renovation transforms the former Dentistry and Pharmacy building into a central campus destination for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Located at a prominent entrance to the North Campus, the building now serves as an accessible point of arrival and a shared setting for learning, work and gathering.

EDUCATIONAL ARCHITECTURE

Zeidler Architecture replaced the century-old building’s fragmented, faculty-specific interiors with flexible classrooms, offices, study areas and circulation routes. The new organization supports interdisciplinary activity by placing academic departments, student services and collaborative spaces within one building. University Commons also centralizes the registrar, dean of students and senior administration, giving students direct access to essential services.

A central atrium organizes movement throughout the building. Circulation extends outward from this space toward teaching areas, open learning zones and shared work settings. Natural light enters through the atrium and reaches several levels, helping occupants understand the building’s layout and move between its different functions.

The design draws from the tree of knowledge and the social character of a shared meal. Four seasonal neighborhoods occupy the building’s corners and provide double-height spaces for informal meetings, conversation and rest. Zeidler left these areas without fixed programming so students and staff can use them according to changing needs throughout the day.

University Commons offers several interior settings for different learning styles. Modular classrooms use adaptable layouts, while open lounges and publicly accessible meeting rooms reduce divisions between student and faculty areas. Custom material selections, acoustic treatments and designer furniture create comfortable spaces for study, discussion and project work.

The Calming Room provides a sensory-conscious setting for rest and mental restoration. A University of Alberta student designed the room through a campus-wide competition that invited students to apply their skills to an institutional design challenge.

Métis artist Christi Belcourt contributes works throughout the shared interiors. Her naturalistic imagery draws from native flora and introduces Indigenous storytelling into daily campus life. The installations connect cultural knowledge, nature and community across areas used by students, faculty and visitors.

The university also opens the building to the wider public through regular events. This programming extends University Commons beyond academic use and positions it as a gathering place for the surrounding community.

Building Information Modelling supported the complex interior renovation by coordinating spatial relationships, new systems and work across several disciplines. Zeidler Architecture has previously completed renewal projects for York University, the University of Victoria and the University of Toronto. The firm recently received the commission for the University of Alberta Convocation Hall renovation.
