Pierattelli Architetture’s latest project breathes new life into a 19th-century apartment inside Florence’s Palazzo Stefanelli. The intervention is part of a broader regeneration initiative, transforming this architectural gem on Borgo Pinti into a collection of refined residential units. The studio’s approach is rooted in a respectful dialogue between historic identity and contemporary design, preserving the grandeur of the past while embracing modern living.

Spatial Organization and Natural Light

Covering 130 square meters, the apartment’s layout centers around a luminous living area that communicates directly with the building’s historic fabric. Generous openings and fluid spatial connections create an inviting, open interior. Natural light is harnessed to highlight textures, finishes, and architectural details, cultivating a serene atmosphere where comfort and heritage coexist.

Restoration and Contemporary Solutions

The renovation is characterized by meticulous attention to original features, frescoed ceilings with geometric and floral motifs are preserved as focal points in each room. The project also integrates advanced living solutions, such as heat pumps, high-performance fixtures, and state-of-the-art home automation, ensuring sustainability and contemporary comfort without compromising the palazzo’s historic integrity.

Design Details: Furnishings and Finishes

In the living room, a marble Cappellini table and Knoll’s Saarinen Executive Chairs set a tone of refined rigor, complemented by the warmth of a rust-colored Arflex Marenco sofa. Lema’s Miki armchairs and a CC Tapis rug introduce chromatic vibrancy, while Baxter’s Nuvola pendant lights and Tooy wall lamps provide dramatic illumination. The custom kitchen by Elmar, finished in metallic pink lacquer, juxtaposes elegantly with neutral walls and parquet flooring.

Bedrooms and Architectural Gestures

The bedroom features Cassina’s Biombo bed in midnight-blue velvet, paired with bespoke walnut furnishings designed by the studio. A standout element is the wooden staircase, conceived by Pierattelli Architetture, which appears to “disappear” into the wall. Its suspended steps and hidden rotation mechanism provide access to a loft-study, exemplifying the interplay between technical innovation and historic sensitivity.

INSPIRING APARTMENTS ON ARCHISCENE

Nursery and Intimate Spaces

The nursery is envisioned as a poetic retreat, with floral wallpaper, a wooden cot, and a leather armchair creating a soothing environment. Bonaldo’s MOON coffee table and a child-sized bookcase complete the space, emphasizing comfort and imaginative design.

Studio Philosophy and Broader Impact

Pierattelli Architetture, founded in Florence in 1980 and now led by Massimo Pierattelli and his sons, is recognized for merging tradition with contemporary needs. Their projects, including Yellow Square and Pieve Aldina, exemplify a commitment to sustainable architecture and contextual sensitivity. The studio’s work on Palazzo Stefanelli reaffirms its philosophy: creating environments where past and present engage in a harmonious, forward-looking dialogue.
