Ashley Botten Design (ABD) has reimagined a family lake house in Muskoka, Ontario, blending elegance and comfort in a space that reflects both tailored craftsmanship and the relaxed essence of lakeside living. The renovation maintained the cottage’s original structure while opening up the interior for better flow and creating intimate, custom-designed areas. One of the key focal points is a curved sofa designed to complement stunning lake views, with attention to fabric detailing.
ABD’s design approach extends to a dynamic use of wood. Wide-plank Douglas fir and golden larch create warmth and contrast in the kitchen, accented with honed charcoal bedrock countertops and aluminum elements. This mix of materials brings both refinement and a contemporary feel to the space. Upstairs, the primary bedroom exudes tranquility with walls in a sea salt hue and a wool-upholstered bed that subtly separates the ensuite for added privacy.
Incorporating sensory touches is a hallmark of ABD’s work. From incense trays in the bathroom to sound-buffering glass doors in the bar lounge, each detail is designed to enhance everyday comfort. Even playful elements, like an upholstered pod near the living room for children, reflect the balance between elegance and practicality.
ABD’s dedication to refinement is evident throughout the home, with thoughtful details that ensure a functional yet luxurious space. The use of custom furniture and intricate craftsmanship speaks to the studio’s commitment to creating a timeless family retreat. With its layered materials, muted tones, and quiet luxury, this Muskoka lake house is poised to become a cherished multigenerational home, evolving through memories and use while maintaining its polished aesthetic.
