ALTA ‘s latest project, the Jean de la Fontaine School, stands as a remarkable homage to the architectural and natural heritage of the Loire region. Located in the Tours area, the design pays tribute to the lush landscape shaped by the Loire and Cher rivers. With its wooded hills, landscaped areas, and private gardens, the region’s rich ecological network provided inspiration for the architects throughout the requalification process. ALTA, in collaboration with FAAR Paysage landscapers, has created a school that harmonizes with its surroundings, prioritizing ecological management and biodiversity while serving the practical needs of its young students. The project, which began in December 2022 and concluded in April 2024, includes a renovated gymnasium and new outdoor spaces designed to support both learning and recreation.

Drawing from the diverse constructions found across the Loire region, ALTA conceptualized the school as a refuge—a modern-day cabin set within a natural environment. The architects were inspired by the region’s traditional gabarres (flat-bottomed boats) and family garden sheds, translating these elements into the school’s design. This imagery is especially present in the building’s volumetry, with three distinct bodies housing the dining area, classrooms, and gymnasium. The low rooflines and overlapping forms evoke a sense of shelter and protection, creating a structure that feels at once inviting and deeply connected to its environment. Its unique silhouette makes a striking impression from the street, blending organic inspiration with architectural clarity.

The school’s design doesn’t just focus on aesthetics; it is thoughtfully structured to enhance user comfort and functionality. ALTA carefully composed the school in a broken line, allowing for distinct spaces to be associated with different activities and times of day. The positioning of the building ensures cross-exposure to southeast and northwest light, bringing natural brightness into the classrooms and other spaces. This careful attention to the school’s orientation supports both energy efficiency and the well-being of its users, integrating natural elements into the building’s everyday function.

ALTA’s commitment to sustainability and user comfort is evident in its choice of materials. Simple, bio-based materials like straw and wood reinforce the idea of the school as a cabin nestled in nature. These materials were selected not only for their environmental friendliness but also for their aesthetic and sensory qualities, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for students and teachers alike. The use of locally sourced, non-polluting materials promotes a circular economy while supporting the region’s natural ecosystems. ALTA’s focus on prefabrication also reflects its dedication to reducing the environmental impact of construction while maintaining high standards of design.

The project’s bioclimatic approach further enhances its ecological credentials. By aligning with sustainable development principles, ALTA has ensured that the school is designed to adapt to its environment, reducing energy consumption and minimizing its ecological footprint. The thoughtful layout and material choices create a building that is in tune with the seasons and the rhythms of its users, offering a model for future educational facilities that prioritize both environmental and human well-being.
