Lemay has unveiled a stunning transformation of Montreal’s Théâtre de Verdure, originally established in 1956. This visionary redesign introduces a new four-season concept that seamlessly merges the realms of theater and park, architecture and landscape, and the built environment with the natural world. Rooted in an inclusive and pluralistic vision, this rejuvenated public space has become more accessible and open than ever before, offering a haven for arts and culture enthusiasts.

Nestled within the picturesque La Fontaine Park, the redesigned Théâtre de Verdure now frames the landscape, providing panoramic views of both the stage and the lush greenspace. Lemay’s innovative design extends its influence from the water basin’s shores deep into the park’s interior, creating a harmonious and timeless presence that enriches the surroundings.

Designed to enhance the experience for both visitors and passersby, the architecture beckons exploration, both inside and outside the site. The result is a modern, vibrant, and green public space that promises unforgettable moments for lovers of arts and culture.

Eric Pelletier, Senior Partner at Lemay and Lead Designer of the project, remarked, “Intervening in the Théâtre de Verdure was an extraordinary opportunity to provide visitors with an architectural, landscape, and artistic experience. The project evolved as a grand scenography of the landscape through architecture, blurring the lines between the two.”

The site’s transformation transcends the traditional idea of a standalone stage, giving birth to a new theatrical destination seamlessly integrated with nature. It allows everyone to rediscover not just the Théâtre de Verdure but also its park and basin. With top-tier stage infrastructure, the venue is now ready to host major outdoor artistic productions, accommodating crowds of up to 2,500 spectators who can watch from the seating area or dedicated greenspace while being enchanted by the captivating scenery on and off the stage.

To ensure year-round accessibility, Lemay created new entrances and extended the pedestrian path around the basin. Low vegetative cover and preserved canopy trees create new perspectives that not only showcase the theater but also integrate it seamlessly within the park’s landscape. Sustainability played a crucial role in the project, with Lemay implementing their NET POSITIVE™ framework to minimize environmental impact. Most spaces are open to the outside, including the green room, which projects onto the pond surrounding the theater. Locally sourced materials, like native Canadian Douglas fir, were preferred over exotic options, aligning with the project’s eco-conscious ethos.
