Sabrab Architecture designs Casa M Ariane in Melides, Setúbal, as a contemporary retreat shaped by restraint, landscape, and the slower rhythm of the Alentejo. Conceived for an international family seeking a place to unwind, host friends, and live close to nature, the house responds with a discreet architectural language that avoids excess while offering comfort throughout the year.

HOUSING

The project’s main challenge was scale. The residence needed to accommodate generous living spaces without dominating the site. Sabrab Architecture answers this through careful positioning among centuries-old cork oak trees and a layout that follows the natural topography. Instead of standing apart from its setting, the house settles into the landscape, preserving privacy, views, and a continuous relationship between interior and exterior spaces.

The design draws directly from the Alentejo context. Horizontal volumes, natural lime plaster, expansive glazed openings, and a restrained material palette reinterpret vernacular architecture through a contemporary approach. Warm earth tones, filtered light, and the presence of cork oak trees guide the atmosphere of the project, allowing the surrounding nature to lead the experience of the house.

Large floor-to-ceiling windows frame the landscape as part of the interior composition. These openings bring the outdoors into daily life, turning trees, light, and seasonal changes into active elements of the home. The architecture avoids unnecessary gestures, relying instead on proportion, material clarity, and visual continuity to create a calm domestic environment.

Inside, the minimalist approach continues through natural materials, soft textures, and a neutral palette. Iconic pieces, including Vitra Eames chairs and Barcelona chairs, sit alongside bespoke timber furniture, contemporary designer lighting, and collectible design objects. A photographic artwork depicting a Japanese motorway adds a sharp visual counterpoint, introducing an urban image into a home deeply rooted in nature.

Casa M Ariane reflects Sabrab Architecture’s sensitivity to Melides and the wider Comporta region. The house creates a way of living defined by stillness, openness, and connection to place. Through its low profile, careful material choices, and strong relationship with the landscape, the project turns contemporary minimalism into a quiet form of belonging.
