The Wind and the Nest

Red5studio teamed up with Ben Decor for the design of the September Cafe in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. The design is inspired the story of “The Wind and the Nest” to continue the story “Autumn and Fall Leaves” from the previous store.

The architects made a nest out of the two adjacent houses, which were currently connected by off-floor dams. The nest has various nooks and crannies. With the benefit of width and height, the façade mimics the appearance of a bird’s nest from a different angle and makes use of several supporting steel structures.

As the wind blows, the circles hanging from the façade will sway, creating the impression of birds perched on a branch. Gentle neutral tones like white, beige, rose-orange, and natural wood colors were employed to evoke the familiar and distinctive sensation of September.

In addition to the circular image and curve that are recalled through the glass openings of the entrance, stairs, on the wall, or even simply the smallest details on the furniture, curves in space are driven by the wind’s image, providing a light feeling like a breeze spreading into each corner.

Regarding the layout of the space, the ground floor’s intention to bring the garden inside produces a “indoor but outdoor” atmosphere that invites guests to sit quick or gather around the bar and enjoy mingling. Those who sit for a long time or travel in groups should use the second and third floors.

If the rooftop were an aerial garden, the lamp part would resemble a branch holding a nest. It also serves as a gathering place for visitors and a designated smoking area. The entire room’s furnishings and decor were influenced by bird’s nests, curves, branches, birds perched on branches, or even just a small circle. This resulted in a bird’s nest in the heart of the city.
