The Park House by Paulo Martins Arquitectura e Design stands on a serene, central street in Aveiro, overlooking a lush city park. This project stems from the transformation and expansion of a deteriorated Art Nouveau building from the early 20th century. The original facade, adorned with intricate limestone carvings of plants, animals, and human figures, held significant architectural and historical importance, shaping the design approach and material choices for the renovation.
Honoring Architectural Heritage
Respecting the legacy of the building’s original facade, the Park House extends outward toward the green core of the city. The renovation retains the essence of the historical exterior, integrating it into the contemporary design. The structure appears as though it has been extruded from the facade, its stone body intersected by wooden slats that add a dynamic texture.

A Structure Rooted in Modernity
The house is constructed using Cross-Laminated Timber, a material choice that combines sustainability with structural efficiency. Its interior layout spans four distinct levels, each with a clear purpose. The basement hosts a garage and workspace, offering a private retreat for introspection. The ground floor serves as the social hub, with spaces designed for gatherings and shared experiences. The upper floors house four suites, providing private sanctuaries for residents. At the top, a terrace crowns the building, offering panoramic views of the city and its surrounding greenery.

Design as a Narrative
The transformation of the Park House represents a thoughtful dialogue between its historic origins and its new, modern identity. The original facade is not merely preserved but becomes a foundation of the design, guiding the building’s connection with its environment. The wooden slats slicing through the stone body add a tactile quality, creating a design that feels both rooted in its context and forward-looking.

A Home in Harmony with Its Surroundings
The design of Park House reflects a deep connection to its setting. Positioned near the city park, the building engages with the natural elements around it while offering a tranquil refuge in the urban fabric. The terrace, with its sweeping views, reinforces this connection, inviting occupants to experience the city from a unique perspective.
