PTW Architects Go For Gold in Africa

All-Africa Games

One of Australia’s foremost international architecture and design firms, PTW Architects, are designing a world-class sports stadium in the Republic of the Congo with ecological features and high standard sports facilities for the 2015 All-Africa Games.

From the Architects:

Located in central Africa, the $500 million (USD) development will contain a 60, 000 seat stadium, a 10, 000 seat indoor stadium, a 2, 000 seat aquatics centre, ancillary facilities and various outdoor venues.

PTW Architects, who were involved in the design and construction of Beijing’s Watercube for the 2008 Olympics, hopes to deliver yet another globally recognisable icon. One of the project objectives is to improve overall impression and image of the city’s buildings, informed by the firm’s international design experience.

The PTW Brazzaville Design Team says the idea for the “gallant gold design” of the Stadium was inspired by the “Sun’s rays, as a symbolic interpretation of the longevity of the games and the excitement and colour that competition brings to the African countries participating in the event.”

Motivated by a desire to perpetuate and develop traditional African culture, PTW Architects said “Water and natural vegetation” features throughout the master plan expressed in the forecourt to these venues, symbolic of land and natural elements, creating a sense of place and identity to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the African Games in 2015.
