reCONFIGURE

In the Indian context, no material speaks of permanency the way concrete does. As the building industry is constantly trying to satiate the growing demands of the booming population, a much speedier building process is the need of the hour, without compromising on the quality and durability offered. The much clichéd “Time is money”, is indeed what keeps the building industry racing against the clock. However, with time on the run and resources getting costlier by the minute, what’s the next best alternative?

Pre-fab is an ingenious solution that addresses time constraint and other factors usually associated with conventional concrete construction methods.

Why Pre-Fab?

Durability, Flexibility,Versatility (both in the design and construction stages of the project). Increased environmental benefits, Very high fire ratings, Time saving

Money saving

The divide between design and production has resulted in increased schedule delays and cost, and a diminished building quality and sustainability because the architecture, engineering and construction are not integrated. Prefab architecture is yielding improved project schedules, decreased costs, and reductions in construction waste.

Our design solution proposes the use of Pre-fab modular components in multiple combinations to create the home for the future. A home that takes personalization and customization to an all new level. A home that can be designed by anyone, with components that are ready to order and built/ rebuilt, modified, extended, subtracted by anyone, any number of times.

Air créte blocks is a lightweight, precast building material that simultaneously provides structure, insulation, and fire and mold resistance. It can be used to make the wall panels, floor and roof panels, and lintels. These blocks are provided with a tongue and groove joint, that can be attached (or detached) to each other, much like tetris puzzle blocks. Meanwhile, the columns and beams are made using pre-cast concrete.

Our design is not about the plan, but what we can offer to any plan. Our plan shown here merely reflects the simplicity of a home where we have created 5 possible scenarios for dwelling and future expansion.

The idea is to rethink the model of home construction, with a Do-It-Yourself approach to building, using flexible modularity that make up or break up spaces to the user’s convenience.

Most pre-cast solutions today do not allow for a wide range of flexibility or customization. These are manufactured homes which are made in factories and merely put on site. Using our modular components, one can create flexible spaces for any user requirement.

Breaking up the house into all the basic components, the design solves flexibility on the micro-level. This is essential to ensure that flexibility can be achieved with much ease, without the need of special equipment or heavy machinery when reconfiguration is required.

Stability:

Concrete has proven time and again to be the best material that responds to the Indian context. Not only does it have the psychological effect of familiarity, but is also equipped with structural integrity, that is of paramount importance to any homeowner. In our prototype, this is ensured by having the components that make up the house, pre-cast using concrete.

Flexibility:

Re-configure relies on the unique usage of re-bars and air créte blocks to create spaces that are infinitely flexible within the framework. Openings for windows, doors, skylights can be made with ease, by removal of the modular blocks.

Economy:

Time, labour and zero wastage are the prime factors for maximum economical benefits. Re-configure is house whose components can be readily ordered based on requirement, minimizing construction wastage and decreasing costs.

Ease of building:

A “Do it yourself” culture to building hasn’t yet made its way into the Indian mentality. Our project aims to change just that. People need to become aware that reconfiguring a house to suit changing needs can be completely hassle-free, without the help of special equipment. A few helping hands is all one needs.

Creativity:

Due to the infinite combinations that can be created using the modular components, the number of possibilities are endless. Patterns, hues, colours, textures, the wall surfaces can be treated however one likes.
