TAOA 798 Studio, designed by TAOA, transforms an aging industrial building in Beijing’s vibrant 798 Art District into a functional and inspiring workspace. This renowned district, celebrated for its merge of industrial history and contemporary art, provided the perfect setting for the project. Surrounded by repurposed factories and creative spaces, the structure was designed to reflect the area’s raw energy while addressing the practical needs of the team.

Reviving an Aging Structure

The project centered on renovating a three-story industrial building. Weathered and uncertain in its original state, the structure presented challenges that became the foundation for its transformation. By retaining the steel frame and reimagining the layout, the team created a workspace that is compact yet functional.

The building’s exterior features anodized aluminum plates chosen for their soft, reflective qualities. Perforations on the west facade control sunlight and privacy. They create a semi-transparent effect that interacts with the surrounding brick walls.

A Thoughtful Interior Layout

Inside, the space is designed for functionality and flow. The first floor is designed as an exhibition space, while the second floor hosts meeting and reception areas. The third floor functions as the primary workspace. To improve vertical connection, part of the floor slab was removed, creating a stairwell that also serves as an open foyer. As one moves through the building, the design narrows and expands.

Bringing Nature Into the Workspace

Although neighboring buildings tightly frame the structure, the design team maximized opportunities to connect with nature. They expanded a narrow gap discovered during demolition into a small yard, centering it around a large tree that brings greenery to the first-floor space. On the third floor, a balcony provides a shaded retreat beneath the tree. The second floor features a semi-outdoor terrace that increases the sense of openness and brings in natural light.

The building’s design concludes with a practical open-air yard on the roof. Bathed in sunlight and surrounded by plants, this space offers a moment of tranquility and creativity. It serves as a final expression of the project’s integration of nature within an urban office environment.

“This small building has become our team’s base of creation. It stands as a symbol of our spirit, providing a space for independent thought amidst a raw and industrial environment,” the designers shared.
