CIVILIAN has completed the interiors for Bard College’s 134,360-square-foot North Campus Residence Complex in Annandale-On-Hudson, United States. The New York City based design studio worked with architecture firm KPF and project management firm DBI Projects on a new residential complex beside the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts. The project includes a 20,000-square-foot Head House with study and student life spaces, along with four dormitory buildings that accommodate over 400 students.
INTERIOR DESIGN
The project continues CIVILIAN’s work with Bard College and DBI Projects. The studio previously collaborated with both on two ground-up student residences at Bard’s Berlin campus, completed in 2021. For the North Campus Residence Complex, CIVILIAN develops an interior approach that responds directly to KPF’s architecture and supports the daily life of students living, studying and gathering on campus.

CIVILIAN draws from the legacy of student dormitories created by Modernist architects including Marcel Breuer, Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. Those buildings gave their campuses a clear architectural identity, and CIVILIAN uses that lineage as a point of reference for Bard. Formal and material cues from these dormitories guide the interiors, giving the school a distinct design language within the new complex.
The Head House reflects Bard College’s creative culture and its record of alumni in the arts, including actor Blythe Danner, comedian Chevy Chase and filmmaker Gia Coppola. On the ground level, archival photographs show scenes of creative exchange and bring the energy of a democratic learning environment into the interior. Large living rooms in the residential buildings extend this idea, giving students from different disciplines places to meet, talk and work together.

Students enter the Head House from the green that organizes the residences. Inside, the ground floor combines soft seating lounge areas with offices and connects vertically through a stair atrium. CIVILIAN uses contemporary custom furniture throughout these shared spaces, including bespoke side tables and work tables with integrated lighting.
The upper floor of the Head House offers another layer of work and gathering space. Study carrels sit behind slatted screens beside a lounge, allowing smaller groups to develop creative projects together. Archival photo frames appear throughout these areas and show moments of collaboration and making, linking the student environment with the school’s broader creative life.

CIVILIAN approaches the 92 individual student apartments through affordability, durability and user experience. The interiors bring warmth and a sense of lightness to communal living. Solid whole woods and selected laminate surfaces appear in modular furniture solutions, while bespoke lighting at different apartment levels refers to Modernist design cues.
The studio worked with manufacturer Foliot to create a bespoke residential furniture collection for the project. Dining tables with trumpet bases and solid tops pair with solid wood benches in living areas. Deep blue wool modular sofas and custom coffee tables define the shared rooms. Student bedrooms include bespoke laminate beds with integrated drawer storage, custom armoires and desks.
