Superimpose Architecture has unveiled The Culture Shift, a striking new civic landmark in Dongguan, China. Located at the core of the rapidly evolving Greater Bay Area, the project embodies the city’s dynamic urban transformation while offering a progressive vision for contemporary civic architecture.

MIXED USE

Conceived as a “terraced landscape for culture, work, and community,” The Culture Shift seamlessly integrates diverse programs, including a municipality house, cultural center, theater, community spaces, and offices, into a highly interconnected and publicly accessible ensemble.

The architecture of the project unfolds as a sequence of ascending terraces, masterfully setting the scene for three main buildings that frame a central courtyard.

The western building serves as the project’s cultural and public centerpiece. It concentrates civic life, stacking a municipality house, community areas, retail, and a theater into a dynamic vertical composition. The design strategically utilizes volumetric shifts to form generous outdoor gathering terraces at various levels, fostering interaction and providing views. A soaring internal atrium acts as the building’s central spine, visually and physically connecting all floors.

The façade of this cultural block is a study in balancing openness and privacy: a highly transparent ground floor ensures visual connection with the public square, a floating middle volume uses frosted glass for community spaces, and the upper volume is clad in fritted glass, housing the main theater and public lobby.

Extending the architectural language of shifting volumes and terraces, two office buildings occupy the south and east sides of the complex. These structures are designed with flexibility and a future-proof leasing strategy in mind. Each office building is vertically divided to accommodate two independent tenants, complete with dedicated entrances, thereby maximizing commercial potential and adaptability. Their aesthetic follows a clean, modern approach, featuring white aluminum façades punctuated by slender vertical fins. These fins serve a crucial dual purpose: filtering harsh sunlight to ensure thermal comfort for occupants while maintaining the sleek, vertical rhythm of the design.

The significance of The Culture Shift extends beyond its physical form; it represents a fundamental change in how modern civic architecture operates. By deliberately overlapping cultural, civic, and commercial programs, the project ensures continuous activation throughout the day and week, mitigating the common issue of underused public space. This mixed-use strategy fundamentally strengthens both the social fabric and the ecological sustainability of the development. The Culture Shift stands as a bold, contemporary model for a civic center—one that is inherently open, highly adaptable, and deeply connected to the diverse needs of its Dongguan community.
