YOD Group introduces Lumo Bistro, a welcoming bistro located on a central street in Dnipro, Ukraine. Drawing inspiration from modern Italy, Lumo combines playful design elements with a warm atmosphere.

Italian Influence and Memphis Inspiration

The design of Lumo pays homage to the cultural and design heritage of Italy, particularly the bold and eclectic Memphis design movement of the 1980s. Mosaic tiles, geometric patterns, and textured veneers throughout the bistro evoke the work of Memphis founder Ettore Sottsass. The project incorporates Alpi veneer, a material Sottsass originally designed, linking the interior to this iconic era of Italian design.

At the heart of the restaurant is a rounded bar that draws attention. Topped with a massive lamp resembling fluffy meringue, the bar acts as both a functional centerpiece and a visual attraction. Illuminated by its surrounding lighting, the bar is visible through the restaurant’s panoramic windows, making it an inviting beacon for passersby.

Craftsmanship and Unique Accents

Lumo’s design celebrates craftsmanship with details that reflect Italy’s artistic traditions. Molded cast-iron table legs, commonly seen in Italian coffee shops, add a familiar touch. Unlike their traditional black-fired finish, the table legs at Lumo feature the cool polish of cast iron, giving them a sleek, modern edge.

Another distinctive feature is the leather tabletops, crafted with raw edges and fixed in a manner inspired by Italian leather workshops. This technique highlights the artisanal roots of the material while introducing an original and tactile element to the dining space.

A Balanced Materials Palette

The materials chosen for Lumo create a harmonious and inviting interior. Mosaic tiles, metal, wood, and leather are central to the design, working together to balance texture and functionality. An achromatic base is brought to life by accents of natural wood, a vibrant orange zoning strip on the floor, and a striking red sink in the bathroom. These splashes of color add energy to the space without overwhelming its minimalist aesthetic.

Rounded shapes further add to the welcoming atmosphere. From the line of the bar counter to the shades of pendant lamps and the massive arch portal separating the main dining area from the wardrobe and bathrooms, these curves soften the overall design.

A Bistro for All Audiences

Lumo was conceived as an accessible and inclusive space, offering high-quality design for a broad audience. “We aimed to create a high-quality and restrained design for a wide audience – a bright, friendly, open format that works right here and now,” explains Dmitry Bonesko, YOD Group’s art director. This vision was realized within eight months, from concept to the restaurant’s launch.
