Komon Architekti’s Villa Bianca: Bridging Past and Future

A Contemporary Ode to History

The historical Villa Bianca symbolizes the architectural skill and expertise of Jan Kotěra, whose vision in 1910-11 brought to life an iconic structure. Over the years, the villa underwent various transformations, culminating in a radical renovation in 2003 under the expertise of Dutch architect Erick van Egeraat. While the exterior pays homage to Kotěra’s original design, the interior underwent a complete overhaul by Komon Architekti, embracing the aesthetics of the turn-of-the-millennium era. However, amidst these modern changes, subtle nods to the villa’s past were preserved, such as replicas of mullioned windows, evoking the spirit of the early 20th-century modernist movement.

In redesigning the villa’s interior, Komon Architekti’s approach was to  blend contemporary elements with a respectful acknowledgment of its historical significance. They aimed to steer clear of adopting a historical perspective while maintaining a contemporary design, adhering to Jan Kotěra’s design philosophy of the quest for form stemming from the function. This approach guided their selection of materials and furniture, with darkly oiled oak and natural brass accents providing subtle references to the villa’s era of origin.

The modifications to the villa were executed with precision, ensuring the preservation of its structural integrity while accommodating the needs of modern family life. By reconfiguring spaces and optimizing natural light, the created environment is conducive to both comfort and functionality. The relocation of the kitchen to a central, sunlit area fosters connectivity within the home, while additional features such as a separate study and dressing area enhance its livability.
